Eighth grade math is a daunting time for a student. In preparation for high school math classes, more complicated equations and complex concepts are introduced, along with new type of numbers and operations. They learn about new types of equations, such as linear, irrational numbers, geometry, scientific notation, distance and angles, and the number system. Online middle school is a great way for students to prepare themselves for high school courses at their own pace.

Gone are the simple days of whole numbers, simple fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These will still be present, but in far more complex terms. Your student may need extra help understanding these concepts and putting them to execution. We are here to help and will do anything in our power to help your student understand these concepts and apply them efficiently, and to help you teach them to the best of your ability.

Eighth Grade Math

We understand that math is a difficult subject for many people. We take pride in our program and know that in no time, your student will have an effective grasp on this area of study. This outline is a rough example of the types of concepts a student should understand by the end of their eighth grade math year. It is important to remember that each child is different, with unique strengths and, yes, weaknesses. We take pride in our curriculum and are confident that you and your student will have a great learning experience in the world of eighth grade math.

What Students Can Expect From An Accredited Online Curriculum

Instruction is focused on three key areas:

  1. Formulating and reasoning to solve new expressions and equations, such as modeling an association in bivariate date with a linear equation, as well as solving linear equations and systems of linear equations.
  2. Understanding a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships.
  3. Analyzing multidimensional spaces and figures by way of distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, while understanding and applying Pythagorean Theorem.

Expressions and Equations

Students can solve equations with radicals and integer exponents, understand connections between proportional relationships, lines, and linear equations, analyze and solve linear equations and pairs of simultaneous linear equations, and understand functions.

Students at this grade eight math level are using linear equations and their systems. They learn to thereby represent, analyze, and solve a multitude of problems. They recognize equations for proportions (y/x = m or y = mx) as special linear equations (y = mx + b), understand the constant of proportionality (m) is the slope, and that the graphs are lines through to the origin. They are learning that the slope (m) of a line is a constant rate of change, where the input or x-coordinate changes by amount ”A”, the output (or y-coordinate) changes by the amount m·A. These students may also use linear equations to describe an association between two quantities in bivariate data (i.e. brown hair vs blonde hair for students in a classroom). At his level, fitting a model, and assessing its fit to data are done in an informal practice. Analyzing and interpreting said model in relation to the data means students must be equipped to express a relationship between two quantities as well as interpret components of a relationship (as slop and y-intercept) as it relates to the situation.

Students strategize choosing and effectively implementing procedures to solve linear equations in one variable, comprehending that using the properties of equality and the concept of logical equivalence maintains the solutions of the original problem. They will solve systems of multiple linear equations in multiple variables, and relate the systems to pairs of lines in the plane that intersect, are parallel, or are the same line. They use linear equations, systems of linear equations, linear functions, and their comprehension of the slope of a line to analyze situations and solve equations.

Input/Output

These students will grasp the concept of function as a rule that assigns to each input, one output. They will see that functions describe situations where one quality necessitates another. They translate among representations and partial representations of functions, noting that tabular and graphical representations may be partial representations, and they can describe how aspects of the function are reflected in the different representations.

Distance and Angles

Students use concepts about distance and angles, how they act under translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations, and concepts about congruence and similarity to describe and evaluate two-dimensional figures and to solve problems. Students demonstrate that the sum of the angles in a triangle is the angle created by a straight line, and that various compositions of lines give way to similar triangles because of the angles created when a transversal cuts parallel lines. Students understand the Pythagorean Theorem and its converse, and can describe why the Pythagorean Theorem holds, for example, by decomposing a square in two different ways. They apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances between points on the coordinate plane, to find lengths, and to analyze polygons. Students complete their work on volume by solving problems involving cones, cylinders, and spheres.

The Number System

Students can describe that there are irrational numbers, and demonstrate how these numbers relate to rational numbers.

Other Math Skills

Students in eighth grade math will define, evaluate, and compare functions in addition to using functions to model relationships between quantities, and grasp geometry.

They will understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software, understand and apply the Pythagorean Theorem, solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders, cones and spheres, and become adept with statistics and Probability. Students will investigate patterns of association in bivariate data.

They will grasp how to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

They will learn about repeating decimals, square & cube roots, negative exponents, working with powers of 10, working with scientific notation, solving equations with an unknown, equations with parentheticals and numbers on both sides, and classify numbers.
